As a former student of a historic schoolhouse noted, “You can’t tell the story of the South without telling the story of Black people.” This #Juneteenth, learn a piece of the story of one Black community in rural #Virginia. https://t.co/BFEtDHU4Z0

#Juneteenth celebrates liberation & news of the end of the Civil War reaching Texas two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today we’re reflecting on the history of Pine Grove School, a Rosenwald school now threatened by a proposed mega-landfill. https://t.co/BFEtDHU4Z0

Thanks to @selc_org for this feature on Pine Grove Elementary, one of our #11Most Endangered Historic Places of 2021. As we enter #Juneteenth weekend, this historic Rosenwald School, which sits at the intersection of racial & environmental justice, serves as a point of reflection https://t.co/99KnfrM8Ww

#VA legislators recognize that fast, frequent & affordable public transportation help combat climate change and boost economic and racial equity. A study of #transit needs they authorized is underway, and should be a focus next session. @MercuryVirginia https://t.co/Csny67cR8t

A recent FERC decision clears the way for Alabama Power #solar customers to take the next step in federal court, challenging one of the highest residential solar fees charged by an investor-owned utility in the nation. https://t.co/vm7iMy9SP7

Congrats to all in #Richmond behind @Richmond300, including SELC Senior Attorney Trip Pollard. The award-winning master plan used a collaborative process to map a path to a more equitable and sustainable future for the city and its residents. https://t.co/2W7uIFBsqu

Maybe we’re biased, but we think the South's hard to beat for stunning imagery and #NaturePhotographyDay is a great chance to share some of it.

Feast your eyes on some of our favorite regional scenes reminding us why we do what we do where we do. https://t.co/HSk3tpSwWt

Motion to advance the petition carries! Our petition for NC to join #RGGI advances to the full Environmental Management Commission on July 13th.

Our petition to limit carbon pollution is gaining traction in North Carolina, where communities are already feeling significant impacts of climate change. The latest vote today brings N.C. one step closer to a clean energy future. #RGGI https://t.co/uWPUeUBm81

As we’re celebrating the power of wind around the world today, SELC is working here in the Southeast to shape this clean energy source off the coasts of Virginia and North Carolina, where shallow waters create some of the best wind power sites in the country. #GlobalWindDay https://t.co/VJ1l84JzbX

We fully support these bills, and are eager to hear these stories told in full. Together, these areas represent a rich cultural, historical, and natural heritage, and we'd all benefit from having them better protected and promoted.

Both bills also honor Indigenous history, as Great Dismal Swamp is the ancestral land of the Nansemond Nation and the historic land of the Haliwa-Saponi and Meherrin Tribes, while the history of Alabama's Black Belt includes the forced removal of Indigenous tribes from the area.

Likewise, @RepTerriSewell's Alabama Black Belt National Heritage Act would honor the history of a landscape that gave rise to the Civil Rights Movement and is home to many of the state’s most significant political and cultural figures. https://t.co/d2IdvsBF9Y

The Great Dismal Swamp National Heritage Act, introduced by @RepMcEachin, seeks protection for one of the only known water-based stops on the Underground Railroad, and would more fully tell the story of the enslaved families who sought refuge in the swamp.

Today, @NRDems will hear two bills critically important to telling the full Black experience in the Southeast.

Together, these two proposed National Heritage Areas would leverage federal dollars to preserve historic places, and promote tourism to them. https://t.co/kFVui5ijzj
