CNA crafted African perfection. Didn’t smoke, drank like a lady, no profanity or rage, dressed sexy but not sexually, not like Beyoncé’s feminism. Wrote about sex but the gentle, distant type. Then someone got under her skin. And very well. And it revealed other things.

Big round of applause to @RodSambakunsi!!!! https://t.co/T3aSqWjuXw

I'm still laughing about how the last Malawi-South Africa Twitter war started because of migrant issues and somehow ended up on rice. 🤣

I for one and am so happy that people are now having to distinguish between critical race theory and critical race studies \s

That there are richer, more talented writers with a wider range than the Afropolitan set is beside the point. The Afropolitans are the acceptable, non-radical faces of African literature. They provide a veneer of "inclusion" while upholding the authority of western gatekeeping.

So frustrating that there are SO many amazing African women writers who don’t get the western accolades as Chimamanda. Way richer, braver, soul and mind nourishing. Some recos here by @jhalakprize 2021 winner Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi https://t.co/guQSUWlrFM

The same gatekeeping tendencies that occur in western "African Studies" departments play themselves out in African literary scenes. Afropolitan writers, who are more accessible to western gatekeepers and gain visibility by conformity, are appointed as spokespeople for "Africa". https://t.co/wEMCtpIEAl

'BAME' does NOT exist...and organisations really need to stop using it. It doesn't serve any purpose other than to categorise anyone NOT racialised as White under a single pathologising category. If you are committed to equity work, start with challenge the language you use.

So long as the (white) “Africanist”literary community remains committed to boosting the profile of the elite, gentle tongued Afropolitan—b/cuz that’s who they want to rub shoulders with—then this is the literary hell we will remain in. https://t.co/1cFqnEFJDI

We have been taught to hate everything about our indigenous knowledge systems on purpose. To believe that they are backwards and degenerate for a reason. But they hold wisdom, value and most importantly they hold answers to our ancestral philosophies.

Indigenous African language discourses around trans identity are not lost but are remanded to traditional systems which manage the dialogue in secrecy to protect them from harm. “Trans” wo/man often doesn’t have translations as the people are ultimately accepted as wo/men.

6 years ago nobody would’ve said Chimamanda Adichie and Kevin Hart would have the same depth

To Africans who dismiss our indigenous beliefs and world views as “Juju” and “Witchcraft” and “backwardness”: what do you think kept your ancestors alive through slavery and colonialism, long enough to birth those who birthed you? That “Juju” is Precisely why you are here today.

I know that many people in academia simply don’t understand such concepts, but I’m on Twitter as myself, not ‘as a sociologist.’ Academia is NOT going to love you back, folks, unclench.
